Garrett Hyman, MD, MPH
Why are you a committed member of the team at Lake Washington Sports & Spine?
I believe the entire team at LWSS is singularly focused on providing physically active people the fastest possible path for restoring their bodies to a high level of performance. Everyone at LWSS comes to work knowing we can and will “do it better” than other area healthcare systems. Small businesses such as ours innovate; we strive to help people heal their bodies faster. This is why I founded LWSS.
What is your super-power and contribution to the team?
People say I am an abundant source of positive energy and always brighten their day! Our team appreciates how I provide wisdom, leadership and followership for creating a happy and inspired workplace where insurance companies do not come first; patients do every time. In addition to being 100% steady and reliable, patients have thanked me for inspiring them to do the hard work necessary for restoring their bodies to peak physical condition in the shortest possible time.
Why do you like working at Lake Washington Sports & Spine?
It is an absolute pleasure coming to work each day at LWSS, where everyone on the team aspires to help our patients restore their optimal health for physical activity quickly while also finding ways to lead in our community. As a deliberately small niche sports medicine practice, we enjoy the autonomy to better serve the interests of our patients. It is rewarding to hear patients tell me how they can immediately “tell the difference” as it relates to their experience as a patient- they know we are a partner in their healthcare.
Tell us briefly about your professional background?
Prior to earning dual MD and MPH degrees from Rutgers University in New Jersey, I earned dual degrees in Spanish and International Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. After serving as Chief Resident for the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington, I completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine. Then I became an owner and partner in a larger private sports and spine medicine practice; where I served for 8 years prior to starting LWSS in 2012.
Tell us about your family and what you like to do for physical activity?
Rachel and I were married in Philadelphia. We have three children, all of whom are quite active. The game of soccer is a personal lifelong passion; I play on both a local team and internationally for the US Medical Soccer Team. Coaching youth soccer teams is another way I am able to give back to the game while spending quality time with my kids and their friends. Lastly, I really do enjoy singing and dancing. Give me a microphone and room on a dance floor at your peril!
What is your favorite non-profit organization or cause and WHY?
I choose to involve myself in family-friendly local service organizations to expose my children to a life of service. Most recently my children and I have volunteered with the Union Gospel Mission and the Salvation Army, and we frequently engage in service projects with Jewish Family Services of Seattle, whose mission is to help vulnerable populations in the Seattle area, to people of all backgrounds and denominations. I am also an active member at The Rotary Club of Bellevue. Rotary’s motto is Service above Self and our club provides many opportunities to serve the Bellevue community.
